Take Shelter

One summer evening, as we were sitting in the living room with family talking and laughing, everyone’s phones started to loudly sound an alarm. A tornado had been spotted extremely close to our area and we were being cautioned to head to safety. In that moment four of us sprang to action while the rest of our group laughed it off and continued with what they were doing. Long story short…nothing came of the threat…at least not in our area and we quickly returned to the group. As expected we got the good natured ribbing that normally comes when we take shelter during a storm. As I listened and laughed along with the expected jokes, a thought came to my mind…sometimes people don’t understand what you have to do to keep yourself sheltered.

This was a physical situation we sought to find shelter in and maybe we overreacted a bit, but sometimes we have to shelter ourselves even when it doesn’t make sense to others. This is true in the spiritual sense as well. For example, maybe others don’t understand your need to stay away from situations that involve alcohol. They may laugh at your refusal to go to a restaurant where alcohol is served because they don’t understand your need to be sheltered from it, but you know the need and you have to continue to protect yourself even if others don’t understand. Philippians 2:12 says- “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

Sometimes you have to do things that others may view as silly because they don’t understand the need for shelter that you have in certain areas of your life. Shelter yourself
anyways. Others may laugh. Continue to protect yourself anyways. You might be doing more than you need, but I would much rather face the enemy with too much protection than be left vulnerable because I didn’t have enough.
